Chalky Finish Bird Cage Upcycling

Each year, September finds me in a mood for redecoration! The school year starts and everything needs to be brand new, and in order to celebrate the new beginning!

If I had the money, I would throw away all the furniture to buy new. But due to :

a. the recession that does not permit a woman to express herself 

b. the fact that our basement is TOTALLY FULL with out-of-fashion but perfectly good items 

c. I still love my husband and want protect him from heart attacts when the credit card bill arrives (It is HIS card, so he should work harder to maintain this love situation)

and last but not least 

d. Deco Art's Chalky Finish line - my right hand in crime

I just redecorate and upcycle staff, instead of buying new expensive ones! These last weeks, I had many projects running, the first of which is today's post.

Κάθε χρόνο, όταν γυρίζω από διακοπές, με πιάνει μανία να αλλάξω το σπίτι. Από τη θέση των επίπλων μέχρι να ανανεώσω όλη μας την επίπλωση! Μου φαίνεται ότι η χρονιά ξεκινάει τότε - μαζί με τα σχολεία κι εγώ- και όλα χρειάζονται μια αναδιάρθρωση! 

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, λίγο η οικονομική κρίση, λίγο ότι έχουμε γεμίσει πράγματα (που λυπάσαι να πετάξεις αλλά δεν χρησιμοποιείς κι όλας), λίγο και η ευκολία των Chalky Finish -  και για μεγάλη χαρά του άντρα μου - αντί να τον σέρνω για ψώνια, απλά τον βάζω να μου στρώσει προστατευτικά στο πάτωμα και να μου αγοράσει κανένα καινούργιο πινέλο!

Τις τελευταίες μέρες,  λοιπόν,  που με χάνεις πού με βρίσκεις όλο βάφω. Έφτιαξα πολλά και λέω να σας τα παρουσιάσω ένα- ένα.

My first "victim" was a birdcage. No bird around here, but it seemed a good purchase many years ago during a visit to the dollar store. As soon, as I brought it home, it found its place at the basement, where gradually was buried under other "very useful"staff I bought afterwards! Lucky cage! This year I decided to put the basement under order,  so it returned to the light!


Το πρώτο μου θύμα, ήταν ένα κλουβί! Πουλί δεν έχω, αλλά μη μου πείτε ότι όταν βρίσκεστε στο γνωστό μεγάλο "παιχνιδοκατάστημα", δεν ξεμυαλίζεστε με τις χαμηλές τιμές σε διάφορα άχρηστα πράγματα, αλλάαααααα....... με προοπτικές! Έτσι κι εγώ, προ τριετίας και βάλε, αγόρασα αυτό το πάμφθηνο κλουβί για διακόσμηση, το οποίο αμέσως βρήκε τη θέση του σε ένα ράφι στην αποθήκη, μέχρι να στολιστεί.Φυσικά έτσι όπως ήταν, δεν είχε καμία προοπτική, οπότε απλά χάθηκε κάτω από σωρούς σαβούρας, μέχρι που φέτος φτιάξαμε την αποθήκη και το ξανα-ανακάλυψα!

Half an hour and two shelves later, I discovered a golden acrylic spray, for cars! Don't ask, beecause I did but noone had a clue how it came to be. Anyway, it seemed the perfect match, so I took both paint and cage to the back yard and what a miracle - the cage became even worse than before! But of course I had a plan! 

Στην αρχή, το ψέκασα με ένα απαίσιο χρυσό. Δεν το αγόρασα - κι αυτό στην αποθήκη ήταν και μάλιστα ήταν χρώμα για αυτοκίνητα! Μη ρωτάτε που βρέθηκε - ρώτησα κι εγώ - αλλά κανένας δεν ήξερε να μου πει! Το πήρα κι εγώ, βγήκα στον κήπο και το ψέκασα!

I had my right hand in crime handy! A full shelf of Chalky Finish Paint. I just love this paint! It needs no priming, most of the time not even varnishing, it paints true to every material (metal, plastic, wood, chipboard), the color remains exactly the same when it dries (HA! no more darkening yeah!)

, you need just a little paint to cover a large surface. AND it is very inexpensive comparing it with the other same-quality-but-very-expensive  brand! Are you listening dear Husband???? Furthermore, you can create thousants of new colors by mixing the old ones, fact that adds to the excitement because I am not only creative, but I want to spend as little money as possible!

So my secret recipe is rather simple:  1 part Treasure and 1 part Primitive. I painted with a very dry brush parts of the cage and made it look old and grungy!. And that's it!

Mischief accomplished!

Μετά ανακάτεψα τα χρώματα μου για να φτιάξω το χρώμα που ήθελα. Η συνταγή μου είναι απλή: 1 μέρος Primitve και ένα μέρος Treasure. Chalky Finish της Deco Art φυσικά, αφού εδώ και μια πενταετία καλύπτουν όλες μου τις ανάγκες και με το παραπάνω! "Πιάνουν" σε όλες τις επιφάνειες (ξύλο, μέταλλο, πλαστικό, φορμάικα, χαρτόνι κλπ κλπ) , έχουν τρομερή καλυπτικότητα, είναι ανθεκτικά και πολύ- πολύ οικονομικά σε σχέση με την άλλη αντίστοιχης ποιότητας μάρκα της αγοράς. 

Και τόσο απλά "παλαίωσα"  το κλουβί και πια δεν μοιάζει με αγορά του 0,99 ευρώ που ήταν, αλλά ένα όμορφο conversation point για τον χώρο μου!

Aimee's Journey to Thailand

Michael, is planning to take Aimee on a mid-winter journey to Thailand. It is their first exotic journey and as Aimee loves drawing and sketching, Michael thinks that it is "neat to have her own personalized journal to record their travels".

I love making travel journals - as I am sure you already know-  but this one had a catch. Michael contacted me with his ideas at the beginning of December, and he wanted to present the book along with the tickets at Christmas. Of course, there was no way I could do it ( shipping to US needs about three weeks --- and it was Christmas!), so I declined the offer.

BUT Michael, replied with the following:

That is no problem. I understand she will not be able receive it for Christmas. Hopefully we can receive it in time for her to use on our first vacation, if not, that is ok. 

How could I say no after this? So I made two journals side by side. Aimee's and mine!

I am sure you have realised which one is mine, right? Oh yes. Aimee is a bright young girl, so she needs bright, bold and happy colors.

Love You Like That

Hello people. It's been a long long time with no post. Although I regurlary post at my Facebook Pages, I was waiting for my hubby to built my new blogs for months. So everytime I had something to share, I was asking him "When my new blogs will be ready?". And he was replying the same with every male around the globe "Soon!" Don't judge him hard. He is full of good intentions. But an online game with other males is sufficient to make him forget each and every resolution he has. 

Instead of waiting for my blogs to be built, I decided to use this one a little more. When they are ready, I will copy- paste the entries. That simple. In the meanwhile.....Ohmmm, ohm, ohm.....

So today, I will show you a journal for two special people. Two people who found each other and found out what love was meant to be. This is what Amy wrote when she explained, what she had 

imagined : 

"I want our book to become something my son, our future children and our future grandchildren can see, can look at and can know, THIS is how love is supposed to feel."

This can melt the coldest heart, don't you think? They both love hot pink, so the book had to be pink. They also love music and butterflies, so I had to add music and butterflies. 

and when Amy got her book, she said 

"Fabulous, amazing and beautiful work! You were such a joy to work with, you really listened and figured US out and created a gorgeous custom book that is just perfect. Thank you so much."

The story of birds and owls, and cute little girls that melt your heart

Today I will show you two special books.  What is so special about them, I hear you ask- they are only two childern journals. Well, the special about these journals is that these two little girls made me break  many of my rules. 

To cut the long story short, girls' mom contacted me just before Christmas to ask about a journal for her elder. You know that as a rule I may accept a custom journal if  I find a. the client or  b. the subject intriguing, but I never ever make journals according to instructions. I charge a higher rate as it is custom work  with all the experimenting and design and such, and I allocate a making time of about 3-4 working weeks .  I never show my work as it progresses. The customer agrees to accept the finished product and see it when it arrives at his address. Well, most of you as my readers or students, know all the above, as I never cease to stress their importance, if you want to be an artist and not a mass-production worker.  In this case I violated every rule and I enjoyed the whole process.

*****Warning: If you do not live with a little girl, you have no idea what I am talking about, so just skip the following *******

The girls, chose their colors and theme. Not just indicated a favorite color and let me build the combos, but asked for specific combinations. They even asked for specific details, such as a heart and birds and butterflies etc.  And luckily changed their mind only once.

 If you have more that one little girl at home, you already know that it is not wise to give something to one and not to the other. So,  I accepted to make two custom journals, in a week's time. And then, I assumed that an owl can "pass" for a bird. You realise that this can only  mean disaster - especially when your sister's signature bird is the owl. 

 I do not dare continue and  tell you about the other rules I broke, because I am very near to lose my credibilty over my students, about the artist's set of rules when accepting a commission. I only want to tell you, that the two girls sent me a photo, sitting in front of their tree, holding their pencil cases, waiting for their journals. Even if you never had a little girl at home, your heart would melt at this point.

I had painted this cover for Izzie who asked for birds. But as I told you,  I was unaware that Allie's signature bird was the owl, so the cover had to change name and owner.

So,  I had to make an other canvas for Izzie. But she is only six and her chosen color pallete very limiting. Only blue, purple and silver, but she wanted birds, butterflies and flowers, all creatures of light and colors.  I had to oblige, so I made  exactly what she asked. This is the point when I received the photo of the girls with their pencil cases. The moment I opened the photo, I realised that Izzie's cover needed a third remake. Although it had all the elements Izzie had asked for, it simply was not her.

With the new advantage of having a face behind the name, I produced this, and this time I think I captured something of little Izzie,  in her book 

In the meantime, the girls' mom, was anxious and  was not sure that she had made the right choice. But she was such a sweet and kind person, and deeply in love with her little artists (exactly like myself with my DD),  that she touched a cord. 

After all, it seemed that it was right to accept this order. It was proving a highly satisfactory one - one I really enjoyed. I decided that the girls deserved some extra features. So I changed the binding to a sturdier one. I added extra pockets and scrapbook pages, scattered among the sketching paper for extra interest. A closure would be handy, and a bookmark and some ribbon to decorate the spine. Every girl loves sparkle, so I decorated with beads, glitter and charms. I even tested the new Kraft Tex ( a new sturdy material - something in between paper and cloth), for a back cover pocket for each of the girls. And in the meanwhile, I die-cutted. Letters and shapes, hearts and flowers, butterflies and grass, even some boats. A stencil would be useful for the 6 year old, so I designed and cut one with simple elements. After adding scrapbook paper and a pen and a stamp and some glitter, and stickers, to each journal, I realised that all these would not fit to their pancil cases, so I added a journal bag as well.

I know that it seems that I could play and play and play with these journals, but I had to send them to the girls - they were waiting. Fortunatelly, although I had only five working days, I had 11 actual (throwing Christmas and New Year vacation in the count) and DH was sick with the flu, so no family activities. Me and my not-so-little artist  (mom I am nearly 11), spent many hours at the studio, Playing with Allie's and Izzie's journals.

Και μια και σας δείχνω μινιατούρες, αυτό το κόσμημα είναι  για την φίλη μου την Πόπη που θέλει να βάλει την παραμονή ένα φόρεμα total black.

Το εξώφυλλο είναι μεταλλικό και οι σελίδες από vintage βιβλίο. Και για ακόμα πιο vintage look, έχουν καψίματα, σκισίματα και είναι βουτηγμένες σε ένα διάλυμα india ink.

A wedding journal in a more romantic style than usual. Sometimes I think, I almost  love pink!!!!!

Watercolor Journals

Εδώ και καιρό, ήθελα να φτιάξω art journals, σε μέγεθος που να χωράει σε τσάντα, αλλά να είναι σύμφωνα με τις δικές μου προδιαγραφές. Να έχει πάρα πολύ καλό χαρτί, πολλές σελίδες , αλλά και να ανοίγει flat και να έχει εξώφυλλο που να εμπνέει.
Αυτή η σειρά είναι 19 x 15 cm, με 100 σελίδες χαρτί Fabriano 300 gsm, ειδικά σχεδιασμένο για wet media( ακουαρέλα, gouache, ακρυλικό, μελάνι κλπ) και έχει ειδικές ενισχύσεις στη ράχη ώστε να ανοίγει flat αλλά να μην αδυνατίζει από τα νερά, και φοβόμαστε τα washes!!!
Νομίζω ότι θα είναι η χαρά του mixed media artist , του art journaler και γενικά όποιου θέλει να δημιουργεί με την καρδιά του, χωρίς να φοβάται μην χαλάσει το βιβλίο του.

Νέα Πρόκληση στο Scraps n Pieces Challenge Blog και μερικές δημιουργίες

Έφτασε ο Απρίλης και οδεύουμε για Πάσχα με γρήγορους ρυθμούς. Καιρός να πιάσουμε τις Πασχαλινές χειροτεχνίες και να σκεφτούμε και λιγάκι διακοπές.

Φέτος το έχω πολύ ανάγκη να φύγω μερικές μέρες, γιατί ήταν μια δύσκολη χρονιά γενικότερα. Δεν θα σας ζαλίσω με τα προσωπικά μου, αλλά ο χειμώνας πέρασε δύσκολα από θέματα υγείας και δικά μου και της άμεσης οικογένειας. Και επειδή λένε ενός κακού , μύρια έπονται, ε φαντάζεστε τι καλά περάσαμε.

Αλλά φυσικά δεν το βάζουμε κάτω και το δικό μας retreat είναι η δημιουργία, οπότε ελάτε να παίξετε μαζί μας στο Scraps n Pieces Challenge Blog. Η πρόκληση μας αυτό το μήνα, έχει να κάνει με treasures όλων των ειδών

Φτιάξτε λοιπόν τη δική σας δημιουργία για το δικό σας θησαυρό/θησαυρούς! Σύνθεση, κάρτα, art journal σελίδα, mixed media καμβά, altered item, ότι σας πει η έμπνευση σας...

Τα άλλα καλά μου νέα είναι ότι ετοιμάζουμε το πρώτο Scraps n Pieces Crop. Θα γίνει το Μάιο, αλλά τι θα κάνουμε ακριβώς, δεν ξέρουμε ακόμα. Παζαρεύουμε ανάμεσα στις παλαβές ιδέες της Αμαλίας (μεχρι και strip scrapbooking μου πρότεινε χθες) και στις πρακτικές λεπτομέρειες της διοργάνωσης. Μόλις καταλήξουμε θα σας πούμε λεπτομέρειες και κόστος. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι ΘΑ ΠΕΡΑΣΟΥΜΕ ΤΕΛΕΙΑ!!!!!!! Γι αυτό κανονίστε προγράμματα!

Εντωμεταξύ, μαζευόμαστε στα μαθήματα και στο Art Journaling Club, όπου δημιουργούμε αλλά κάνουμε και παρέα, περνάμε καλά και μιλάμε όλες στο ίδιο μήκος κύματος!

Σας αφήνω τώρα, αλλά όχι για πολύ, αφού θα επανέλθω με δημιουργίες και tutorial!

Mixed Media Canvas Workshop

Για να μην σας αφηνω σε αγωνία. 

Ετοιμο το καμβαδάκι που θα φτιάξουμε στο workshop του επόμενου Σαββατου (15/3). Εχει τα πάντα όπως βλέπετε. Πάστες, mediums, mists, κρακελέ, ακρυλικά, γκέσσο, stencils, distress stains, stickles, αλλά και περλέ φινίρισμα παρακαλώ. Σας έφτιαξα? Οποια δεν εχει δηλώσει συμμετοχή, έχω άλλες 2 θέσεις

Our Story Journal

Αυτός ο μήνας ήταν λίγο τρελός. Έφτιαξα πάρα πολλά βιβλία, προέκυψαν διάφορες αναποδιές, κάναμε και τη βολτίτσα μας από τα διάφορα νοσοκομεία (είναι για να μπει καλά η χρονιά).

Μέσα σε όλες όμως τις παραγγελίες κατάφερα να φτιάξω και μερικά βιβλία, που είχα μισοτελειωμένα πάνω στον πάγκο μου ή ακόμα και τελειωμένα στο μυαλό μου, αλλά που ήθελαν αρκετή δουλίτσα για να πω ότι είναι έτοιμα να μπουν στις θήκες τους και να αναζητήσουν παραλήπτη.

Σας έδειξα ένα προχθές, σας ανεβάζω άλλο ένα σήμερα και έπεται συνέχεια. Πάντως ο πάγκος μου επιτέλους συμμαζεύτηκε

Αυτό, λοιπόν, είναι το βιβλίο μου, ελπίζω να σας αρεσει.

Καλό μήνα! Μπήκε και ο Φλεβάρης με καινούργια πρόκληση στο Scrapbookers in Greece. Τι θέλουμε από εσάς?  Ε Φλεβάρης και αγάπη πάνε μαζί, οπότε το θέμα μας είναι....

Δεν είναι άλλο από την αγάπη που είναι παντού. Εμπνευστείτε από αυτή και χρησιμοποιήστε μια φωτογραφία του αγαπημένου σας προσώπου, της οικογένειάς σας, του παιδιού σας, του κατοικίδιου σας... Ή ακόμα και ενός πράγματος ή μιας συνήθειας που λατρεύετε! Ξαφνιάστε μας ευχάριστα με το θέμα που θα διαλέξετε και δημιουργήστε με την καρδιά σας ;-)Φτιάξτε έναν καμβά και χαρίστε τον σε ένα πρόσωπο που αγαπάτε πολύ ή ακόμη και μια μικρή καρτούλα... και μόνο η κίνηση σας θα δώσει μεγάλη χαρά ;-)

Embossed faux metal technique

Λίγο με τις γιορτές και πολύ με τη δουλειά, δεν πρόλαβα να παραδώσω στην ώρα μου τη συμμετοχή μου στο Scrapbookers in Greece Έστω και καθυστερημένα  λοιπόν, σας έφτιαξα ένα tutorial, για το πώς θα φτιάξουμε faux metal με υλικά του σπιτιού μας.

Καλές δημιουργίες

Μυρτώ

Worksop παλαίωσης με ακρυλικά.  Δεν θέλω να κάνω διακρίσεις στις μαθήτριες μου,, αλλά η διαφορά του απουσιολόγου φαίνεται! Ο απουσιολόγος δουλεύει και το υπόλοιπο τμήμα κουτσομπολεύει!

Το τραβήξαμε χθες μέχρι το βράδυ αλλά περάσαμε τέλεια. Δημιουργήσαμε, φάγαμε, ήπιαμε και είχα και τουλάχιστον μια μαθήτρια που κράτησε σημειώσεις σε αυτά που έλεγα!!!!! Ε? Δεν πρέπει να είμαι περήφανη ως δασκάλα????

Οι παραγγελίες πληρώνουν τους λογαριασμούς μας,  αλλά καμιά φορά είναι χωρίς φαντασία και με περιορισμένα περιθώρια δημιουργίας.

 Ένα τέτοιο βράδυ , λοιπόν, που έπρεπε να φτιάξω μια παραγγελία, αλλά βαριόμουνα φοβερά, σκέφτηκα να της δώσω λίγο ενδιαφέρον βάζοντας για εξώφυλλα οντουλέ χαρτί. Δεν ήμουνα και πολύ σίγουρη ότι θα αρέσει στον πελάτη, δεν ήθελα και να σπαταλήσω το potential που μου έδινε το οντουλέ, οπότε αντί για ένα κλασσικό βιβλίο μαγειρικής μου προέκυψε αυτό που βλέπετε. Το βάφτισα "Apothecary journal" και κρέμασα επάνω του εκτός από αλυσίδες και διάφορα μέταλλα, ακόμα και το βαζάκι με το αντίδοτο του δηλητηρίου που αναφέρει η ταμπέλα!

Και αφού ξέδωσα με τη δημιουργία μου, τώρα πάω να φτιάξω έναν τσελεμεντέ!
