TimeKeeper Journal

The young man sat at the desk with a sight. This time he knew that he was close. He was very close to decipher the scripts and begin his journey. "Damn the mechanic!", he thought as he opened the old journal with the faded pages. The drawings were incomplete, the instructions were indecipherable... the most vital parts were coded! And still! If he wanted to make sure that the journal would not be read, he would never have left it on the desk before beginning the time travel.
"The man left a note, for heavens sake! He wanted us to try!", he said aloud. He looked at the yellow cringled paper. The scribbles read : "Beware traveller: Ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time. And circulating light could twist space!" 
Ok this would explain the anthropomorphic Octopus on the cover. AND the glyphs around the clock. The last sentence could explain the glass dome over the compas. And the gears were the symbols of the machine. But what then?.......

My new journal. One which combines Lovecraft and Cthulu Mythos, Steven Hawkins and his time theories, all seen under the prism of the Steampunk Era.

Bookfolding - Δείτε πόσο εύκολο είναι και φτιάξτε το δικό σας!

Bookfolding βέβαια ξέρετε τι είναι! Αποκλείεται να μην έχει πάρει το μάτι σας κάπου βιβλία διπλωμένα έτσι που οι σελίδες τους να σχηματίζουν λέξεις ή εικόνες. Έχουν γίνει αρκετά της μόδας τα τελευταία χρόνια- τόσο, που απλοί μαγαζάτορες που πουλάνε ότι πουλάει, πλέον δηλώνουν "καλλιτέχνες" στα πρωινάδικα.

Καλά μην νομίζετε ότι άρχισα να βλέπω πρωινάδικα - τα εγκεφαλικά μου κύταρα τα χρειάζομαι για πολλά χρόνια ακόμα- αλλά στον κόσμο της χειροτεχνίας αργά ή γρήγορα, όλα μαθαίνονται και κυκλοφορούν, ακόμα και τα λινκ από τα πρωινάδικα. Το τρομακτικό της υπόθεσης βέβαια, δεν ειναι ο κάθε ταλαίπωρος που δηλώνει ότι "ανακάλυψε το bookfolding" , αλλά οτι προφανώς τα πρωινάδικα έχουν τόση απήχηση που παίζουν και στο ιντερνετ - μήπως καταφέρουν και αποβλακώσουν και κανέναν το απόγευμα σε επανάληψη!! Μετά αναρωτιόμαστε πώς έχουμε γίνει έθνος προβάτων! Τέλος πάντων - πίσω στο θέμα μας!

Λοιπόν, το bookfolding δεν ανακαλύφθηκε στην Ελλάδα φυσικά, ούτε κανένας από όλους αυτούς που διπλώνουν βιβλία, "ανακάλυψε" τίποτα καινούργιο! Είναι βασισμένο στην αρχαία Κινέζικη τεχνική του paper folding ή όπως την ξέρουμε σήμερα origami. Βέβαια τότε δεν λεγότανε έτσι, αφού αυτή η λέξη είναι σχετικά πρόσφατη (μόλις του 1800 μχ) και μάλιστα προέρχεται από την..... Γερμανία!

The Japanese word "Origami" itself is a compound of two smaller Japanese words: "ori" (root verb "oru"), meaning to fold, and "kami", meaning paper. Until recently, not all forms of paper folding were grouped under the word origami. Before that, paperfolding for play was known by a variety of names, including "orikata", "orisue", "orimono", "tatamigami" and others. Exactly why "origami" became the common name is not known; it has been suggested that the word was adopted in the kindergartens because the written characters were easier for young children to write. Another theory is that the word "origami" was a direct translation of the German word "Papierfalten", brought into Japan with the Kindergarten Movement around 1880.

Όχι , μην τρομάζετε - δεν θα σας ζαλίσω με την ιστορία του paper folding, αν και εγώ το ξέρετε ψοφάω για κάτι τέτοια! Σας έχω όμως ένα λινκ, για όσους από εσάς ενδιαφέρονται να την μάθουν! Γιατί τελικά,  η τεχνική του paper folding αναπτύχθηκε παράλληλα σε ανατολή και δύση, με κέντρα την Ιαπωνία και την Ισπανία,  για να φτάσει στην σημερινή μορφή της.

Εγώ origami δεν κάνω, όπως η φίλη μου η Χαρά, ούτε quilling όπως η απίθανη Anama , αλλά ξεκίνησα να διπλώνω το 2014, ως άσκηση υπομονής. Παλιότερα έφτιαχνα παζλ, αλλά όταν ανακάλυψα το bookfolding, βρήκα νέα ασχολία. Γενικά είμαι ανεμοστρόβιλος, οπότε στη ζωή μου χρησιμοποιώ κάποιες δημιουργικές ασχολίες, ως ασκήσεις πειθαρχίας,  αυτο-συγκέντρωσης και "μηχανικής" απασχόλησης.  Τότε δεν ήξερα ότι το bookfolding θα είχε τόση απήχηση και θα δίπλωνα δεκάδες βιβλία σε δύο χρόνια! Αλλά να που έγινε και μερικά από αυτά, μπορείτε να δείτε εδώ .

Μάλιστα πρόπερσι τα Χριστούγεννα, έμαθα και την κόρη μου να διπλώνει (9 χρονών), για να βγάλει το Χριστουγεννιάτικο χαρτζιλίκι της, να  μάθει την αξία της δουλειάς, αλλά και τι ακριβώς αντιπροσωπεύουν τα χρήματα που έπαιρνε ως δώρα και ξόδευε χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη.

Σήμερα υπάρχουν δύο απλές μέθοδοι για να φτιάξετε τα δικά σας folded books. Η μία είναι εκτυπώνοντας την εικόνα (ή την λέξη), που θέλετε να εμφανιστεί στο βιβλίο σας. Ένα πολύ κατατοπιστικό tutorial θα βρείτε εδώ . Η μέθοδος αυτή είναι γρήγορη και εύκολη, και αν αυτό που θέλετε, είναι να φτιάξετε διακόσμηση για το σπίτι σας ή κανένα δώρο για τους φίλους σας, σας τη συνιστώ. Δεν είναι τρομερά ακριβής - δηλ το αποτέλεσμα "χορεύει" λίγο - αλλά πιστέψτε με κανένας δεν θα το καταλάβει .

Η δεύτερη μέθοδος, δεν είναι στην πραγματικότητα διαφορετική,  από την από πάνω, απλά έχει αρκετά παραπάνω βήματα. Γι αυτό και παράγει πολύ πιο ακριβή folds, αλλά θέλει επιεικώς την τριπλάσια και βάλε ώρα μόνο για το πατρόν. Δεν θα μπω σε λεπτομέρειες αφού θα βρείτε ένα πολύ καλό tutorial εδώ , που εξηγεί πώς γίνεται να φτάσετε από την απλή εικόνα της προηγούμενης μεθόδου σε ένα πατρόν με ακριβείς μετρήσεις. Το μόνο που θα προσθέσω, είναι ότι στο τέλος θα χρειαστεί ένα ρετουσάρισμα για να ειναι το πατρόν σας σίγουρα καλό, αφού όσο και να προσπαθήσετε να φτιάξετε τις καμπύλες στον υπολογιστή, τα pixels είναι pixels! Αφού το σιγουρέψετε ότι το πατρόν είναι καλό, ξεκινάτε το μαρκάρισμα του βιβλίου που επιλέξατε και στην συνέχεια το δίπλωμα σελίδα σελίδα. Αυτή είναι η μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιώ εγώ και δίνει πολύ ακριβείς μετρήσεις. Είναι λίγο μπελαλίδικη, αλλά νομίζω ότι η τελική διαφορά δικαιώνει τον έξτρα κόπο.

Όμως μην σας πιάνει το άγχος. Μπορείτε να παραλείψετε όλη την διαδικασία της κατασκευής του πατρόν,  να αγοράσετε κάποιο έτοιμο και εσείς απλά να διπλώσετε το βιβλίο της επιλογής σας.  Όταν αγοράζετε πατρόν καλό είναι να προσέχετε τα εξής:

1. Φυσικά να είναι πατρόν και όχι μια απλή εκτύπωση όπως αυτή που είδατε στο πρώτο tutorial (ω ναι υπάρχουν και αυτά δυστυχώς)
2. Προσέξτε το πατρόν που θα βρείτε, για τι βιβλίο είναι φτιαγμένο. Θα τσεκάρετε το ύψος του βιβλίου και τον αριθμό των σελίδων που χρειάζεται.
3. Όσο πιο πολλές διπλώσεις έχει ένα πατρόν, τόσο πιο ευανάγνωστο είναι. Τα μικρά πατρόν να ξέρετε μην τα προτιμάτε. Για να γλυτώσετε λίγη δουλειά, θα χάσετε όλη την υπόλοιπη που κάνατε!

Μπορείτε να βρείτε αρκετά πατρόν στο ETSY (λατινικό αλφάβητο), αλλά και στο scrapsnpieces.gr φτιαγμένα μάλιστα από τα χεράκια μου.  Πέρσι κάποια στιγμή σας είχα φτιάξει και ένα μικρό βίντεο για το πώς διαβάζουμε ένα πατρόν, το οποίο θα βρείτε εδώ

Όταν διαλέγετε βιβλίο:
1. Προσέξτε οι σελίδες του να είναι "ομοιόμορφες" - δηλ να μην έχει διαφορετικό χαρτί πχ στις φωτογραφίες - όπως έχουν κάποια επιστημονικά βιβλία ή εγκυκλοπαίδειες, γιατί κινδυνεύετε να σας βγει πουά ή ριγέ αυτό που θα φτιάξετε!
2. Προσέξτε την ράχη του βιβλίου να είναι καλά κολλημένη και πολύ δυνατή, γιατί αν δεν είναι, θα φτάσετε στο τέλος , μόνο για να ανακαλύψετε ότι το βιβλίο σας διαλύεται!
3. Το χαρτί του βιβλίου να μην είναι εύθραυστο - δηλ μην προτιμάτε βιβλία αντίκες - γιατί κινδυνεύουν να μην αντέξουν τη δίπλωση.

Για όποιον θέλει να κάνει μια δοκιμή, στο scrapsnpieces.gr, στην κατηγορία bookfolding, θα βρείτε και ένα free pattern, για να φτιάξετε το βιβλίο της φωτογραφίας. Θα χρειαστείτε βιβλίο ύψους 18 cm τουλάχιστον, που να έχει το λιγότερο 185 σελίδες, δηλαδή 96 φύλλα! Κάντε λογαριασμό στο site (αν δεν εχετε ήδη) και χρησιμοποιήστε τον κωδικό SNPFBF2016 στο checkout, για να κατεβάσετε το πατρον δωρεάν!

Η συνέντευξη μου στην Ranay James - Μέρος ΙΙ

Έχω καιρό να σας ανεβάσω ποστ, αλλά από την αρχή του μήνα, έχω μπλέξει τόσο πολύ, που δεν προλαβαίνω να μπλογκάρω. Καινούργιες παραλαβές στο scrapsnpieces.gr που μας έχουν κρατήσει στο κλεινόν άστυ, αλλά και εξτρά δουλειά αφού αποφασίσαμε να αναβαθμίσουμε το site. Αν βάλετε στο λογαριασμό και όλα τα travel journals αλλά και τα γαμήλια , που συνιστούν το συνηθισμένο χαμό της εποχής, θα καταλάβετε όχι μόνο γιατί δεν έχω προλάβει να σας ανεβάσω κάποιο ποστ, αλλά και γιατί ακόμα δεν έχω κάνει ούτε ένα μπάνιο.. What are the top three things that you love most about the book binding business?

I do not know if I am considered a typical bookbinder in the sense that I do not bind printed books and I never accept typical bindings like dissertations, company catalogues etc.

I like to think of myself as a Book Artist. I bind almost exclusively journals (blank books), and apart from the binding, I shape and give character to the whole book.

 This part gives me the freedom to express myself artistically, while the actual work of binding which is very structured and precise, somehow balances and constraints my usually impulsive and extravagant self.

I love its project-based nature – I cannot imagine myself locked in an office doing repetitive tasks. I think I would die!

I love to create something from nothing, and I so love how the paints and media can change a common piece of greyboard to something with a personality!

Is book binding a dying artform or do you see a revival happening in the world?

No, it is not a dying artform and that is certain. Although e-readers, notepads and our mobile phones are more convenient for the day-to-day jobs, i.e. keeping notes, writing documents, even for reading books, the book itself is more than a vessel of words.

When we read a book we do not only appreciate only a good story, but we also appreciate the way that it is written: the style, the expressions, the elaborate diction of the writer. The same happens with a book. Although we can write /read exactly the same in an electronic device, we really express ourselves when using our hand to draw our words and feelings. The result is not just words with a meaning, but a part of us!

Bookfolding and an interview!

Through ETSY, I have met all types of interesting people. And I am not only talking about Etsy sellers- although most of them are  truly creative minds and interesting people-but for ETSY clients as well! You know, when you want to know personal details, such as  loves and fears, hopes and traumas, lifechanging events  and plans for the future  of an individual,  in order to create your art, it is only natural that from a point onwards, that  you are considered and feel something like  an old aquaintance, a friend, and of course, a trusted person. This is what I love about ETSY. The personal involvement, the new friends, the communication and of course the art that is produced throughout the market place.

One of these interesting people I am talking about, is the author Ranay James. Her story is one of a woman of our times. Highly succesful corporate executive, who stepped away to find a meaning in her life! She moved to  a ranch in Texas and decided to make a living from her passion and write fantasy novels! Ok ! I am sure that since you read  the "writer" word, you had already guessed, that Ranay is a fantasy writer!

Tell us a little about your background with the art of bookbinding? When did you get started? Have you had any formal training or education in bookbinding or has it all been on the job training? What kinds of things have you done / experiences have you had in the craft of bookbinding that our audience of book lovers might find interesting? How did you decide being a bookbinder was the career choice for you?

I was born in 1972 in Greece, so I was lucky to grow up playing outside with friends, without TV, computers and the internet. Back then, books were our “window” to the world. My mom kept a huge library at home and we were allowed to visit the local library once a week to borrow new titles. I was always a bookworm. Mom always said that I only wished for books as presents. I love that my daughter is exactly the same, nowadays! I was always enchanted by books, not only by their stories but also by their editions. We had some great publishers in Greece, and even the most common title, were hard covered, with good quality paper, beautiful illustrations and was a great addition to any library at a very affordable price. I was really shocked, two decades later, when I encountered the “mass market paperback” concept, during my postgraduate studies in Scotland. While in Scotland, I discovered art journaling. I always kept a diary, but for art journaling, I needed a good watercolor journal. I tried several popular journals, but either the paper was not good enough or the spine was not strong – I was not happy with any of them. My studies were in Computer Science, but our University had several arts and crafts workshops and clubs, that students could participate. As soon as I was informed that a new bookbinding workshop was planned, I signed for it. And then I was hooked! After university, I returned to Greece and worked at the family business (a clothing retail company) for ten years. Every time there was a bookbinding class offered in my area, I was the first attendee. I was bookbinding as a hobby always exploring new concepts, ideas, and methods. I was making journals for myself, for family and friends, for friends of their friends who liked my journals or for the pure joy of giving life and character to some simple pieces of paper. When the economic crisis knocked our country, and the family business started to decline, I decided that this was my chance to make a living from something I really love – my journals!

What is the most amazing project that you have completed?

Some years ago, during a visit at the Warwick Castle, I was impressed by a collection of municipality tomes from the middle of the 18th century. These books were the town records, hand-written by scribes, whose penmanship alone was worth seeing. But what was really amazing, was the fact that they were about 3/4 of a meter tall, weighed more than 3 kg and were STILL functional after two centuries of hard use! We are talking about books made before the modern glues were invented! I was dying to make such a big tome! So when an Australian tattoo artist asked for a huge book to draw his tattoo designs, I grabbed the chance! The book weighed more than 5.5 kg and for its binding I used more than 13 meters of linen thread! You can see this projectm here.

What is the strangest project that you have completed?

The strangest project I did, I am not allowed to show, according to the request of its owner. What I can tell you though is, that this journal is going to be kept in a vault for 350 years and then be given to the female descendant of my client at the time. For this project, I investigated the paper mills of Europe, and found out that the St Cuthbert Mill has a paper which guarantees that will be imperishable for 500 years!
